Airlie Beach

Why is Airlie Beach the center of the holiday action in the Whitsundays? The reasons are numerous. Firstly, Airlie Beach is the closest town to the Whitsunday Island resorts and because of this it has become the major service center and until the airport was built on Hamilton Island all guests would come to Proserpine airport and then transfer to the island resorts via coach and ferry transfers through Airlie Beach,. The town grew to develop it own infrastructure through this beginning. Airlie Beach developed its own accommodation industry. A great marina at Able Point and the bare boat industry that is now so huge in the area, started in Airlie beach. Its role is not that different today even though the bulk of island guests now arrive through Hamilton Island airport. Airlie Beach is now a tourist destination in its own right as well as providing a mainland link for supplies and guests to the major island resorts.

Airlie Beach is all about sailing and water based activities. Practically every maxi yacht that has ever been built in Australia has found its way to the Whitsundays after its racing days were over. The marina at Able Point is now choc a block with dozens of famous yachts that once vied for line honours in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race and many others. There are a number of companies that have developed the bare boat industry in the Whitsundays and these companies have hundreds of charter boats in their combined fleet. Such is the demand for marina berths, that a new marina is now under construction at Muddy Bay at the eastern end of the town.

Airlie Beach is the most popular backpacker destination in Australia. They all come here at some stage during their Australian travels to take one of the three day cruises that operate from Airlie Beach. These cruises usually include all food, diving and snorkeling, days at Whitehaven Beach, great sailing and partying into the night. Back in town, there are a number of backpacker hostels that cater for this huge influx of tourists. At the other end of the market, the hillsides above the town center are covered with beautiful new apartment resorts. The views from these apartments are nearly all panoramic ocean views over the beautiful waters of the Coral Sea, to the north and include some of the magnificent islands in the Whitsunday Passage.

Airlie beach is the heart of the Whitsundays holiday region.
